Tsunamis

Tsunamis are very powerful series of waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water.  They can be exceedingly destructive, causing the loss of life, as well as property damage.  Do tsunamis occur only in coastal communities?  Are earthquakes the sole cause of tsunamis????

  1. Tsunamis occur mostly in coastal communities and low-lying coastal areas. Earthquakes are the main reason for tsunamis because when earthquakes occur beneath the sea, it causes the water above to form a huge wave. This huge wave is a tsunami, and it is most destructive when it is on land.

  2. Most of the time tsunamis occur by coastal areas. Earthquakes can also cause tsunamis. Vibrations from an earthquake are transfered to the water's surface and spread. The earthquake can cause big waves that when go on land can destroy houses and kill people.

  3. Tsunamis can occur at any places in the world where they're close interaction with large bodies of water and a fundamental source of vibrations we know as earthquakes. They typically form when there's a sudden movement on the seafloor. When this happens, the vibrations causes shockwaves which send out huge waves we call tsunamis. So no, tsunamis don't necessarily have to be near coastline communities.
Earthquakes are not the sole cause of tsunami formation. Landslides are another cause of tsunamis. They cause huge waves to build up as the dense material suddenly collapses on the water, these also send out tsunami waves. Another cause of tsunami would be comets or asteroids hitting the Earth's oceans. When they do, they also send out huge bursts of radiation through water. This causes large tsunami waves to build up and hit the coasts.

Can we talk about affects of tsunamis for the next topic? Or astronomy... if that relates to what we're doing! :p

  4. After an earthquakes forms, there are are aftershocks that may follow and with tsunamis. Tsunamis form when they interact with vibration which cause earthquakes. They form when sudden movements pass through the seafloor, and shock waves pass out waves causing Tsunamis. Comets, asteroids, and landslides cause tsunamis at coastal communities or other places.

  6. Tsunamis are a one or a series of water waves that usually occur when a disturbance or displacement happens in a large body of water such as an ocean or large lake. This disturbance can be caused not only by an earthquake but also by volcanoes, underwater explosions including nuclear explosions, landslides and other types of mass movement and meteorites above or below water have been known to be able to cause a tsunami. Also Japan and other coastal regions have been known to have the most recorded tsunamis. Tsunamis are considered really dangerous natural disasters due to the fact that if on land they can create devastating destruction to both property and lives.

  9. Tsunamis are seismic sea waves. They do occur at coastal areas. Vibrations from earthquakes are transferred to the ocean's surface and spread across the ocean. Then, the waves travel across the oceans from 500 to 950 km per hour. Then, when a tsunami reaches shallow water, friction slows it down and causes it to roll up into a wall of water up to 30 meters high before it breaks against the shore(pg.184 from Glencoe Science Textbook). That is what a tsunami is.

  10. Tsunamis usually occur in coastal communities and in coastal regions below sea level. Earthquakes are the sole cause of tsunamis because the sesmic waves or energy movement in the Earth's lithosphere causes the ocean tide to rise and spread thousands of miles from the epicenter. Some tsunamis are destructive, while some are not even harmful. For example, the tsunami in Japan was caused by a 8.9 earthquake. This is more than enough to wipe out most of the country because of its high and spreading waves.
(Hundreds of people died from this devastation, Hundreds are still lost. Japan is in ruins.):_(

  11. First of all, tsunami happens in coastal areas. To be more specific it happens in low-lying coastal areas. :'(
Well, in most cases earthquakes are the sole causes of tsunamis. When an earthquake occurs on the ocean floor, the sudden movement pushes against the water and powerful water waves are produced. These waves can travel outward from the earthquake thousands of kilometers in all directions. When these seismic waves, or tsunamis, are far from shore, their energy is spread out over large distances and great water depth. The wave heights of tsunamis are less than a meter in deep water, and large ship can ride over them and not even know it but underneath the ocean, there's a large wall of water can reach speed up to 950 km/h. However, when tsunamis approach land, the waves slows down and their waves heights increases as they encounter the bottom of the sea floor. The height can at least reach up 30 m in height. This causes large tsunami waves.
(R.I.P) To all those in japan who died and are dying right now especially girls :'( .

  13. Tsunamis don't only occur in coastal communities. Yes, they often occur in coastal communities, but tsunamis can occur anywhere where there are generally bodies of waters. Tsunamis occur when there are sudden changes in the seafloor. Earthquakes generally cause tsunamis, but landslides and volcanic eruptions can cause tsunamis. Earthquakes aren't the sole cause of tsunamis, although there are the biggest. When earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or landslides occur underwater, a huge amount of energy is released. This huge amount of energy has to go somewhere, therefore, it is pushed towards land. Tsunamis create great destructions to environments, killing thousands of people.

  14. Tsunamis is another hazard from an earthquake. When an earthquake occurs on the ocean floor the sudden movement causespowerful water waves which are produced. People living near the shoreline must protect themselves because waves can travel outwards in all directions. In the open ocean tsunamis can reach a speed of 950 km per hour. As they reach land the waves slow down but the height increases. I don't think that they occur in costal communities because they occur where there is bodies of water. I also say that they occur in costal areas. Also earthquakes are the main reson for tsunamis because when an earthquake occurs on the seafloor it produces huge waves. Tsunamis cause a lot of disruptions and davastations. With it's huge waves, great height and speed it can kill thousands of people.

  15. Tsunamis often occur in coastal communities, but tsunamis can occur in places other than coastal communities, as long as that area is near bodies of water. When there are sudden changes on the seafloor, a tsunami occurs. Earthquakes can generally cause tsunamis, but they are not the sole cause. Landslides and volcanic eruptions can also cause tsunamis. When landslides, volcanic eruptions or earthquakes occurs underwater and abundant amount energy is released. The energy that is released is pushed towards land. The energy builds up the waves, causing the tsunami to grow and move towards land hitting areas near the large bodies of water.

  16. Well, Tsunami mostly occurs in Coastal areas, but that’s not the only areas they occur. Tsunamis occur when two plates collide. That collision makes a pressure which forces the water to the surface. This forms a huge wave known as Tsunami. Therefore, Tsunami usually occur anywhere where earthquake, or collision of two plate occur.
However, earthquakes aren’t the sole cause of tsunamis. Sometimes it’s also for cosmic impacts.

  17. Tsunamis can happen anywhere in the world, but some places are more vulnerable to tsunamis than other places. Though tsunamis are more common in the Pacific Rim. Over 80% of the worlds tsunamis occur by the Pacific Ocean. Earthquakes aren't the sole of tsunamis but is the few ways of causing it. Earthquakes will cause the rise or fall of sea floors. To be more specific, when two plates collide, the less dense will subduct under the more denser plate which causes the rise or fall of the sea floor. The sudden move of the sea floor will a rapid movement water which then causes waves. As the waves get closer to the coastal line, it gets shallower, waves get bigger which makes it a tsunami.

  18. Tsunamis a series of water wave is caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, usually an ocean, though it can occur in large lakes.Tsunamis also occur through deposits of shell, coral and boulders which are well on top of sea level and several kilometers inland. Most of the worl'ds tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, they do happen in coastal areas, but they happen other places too.Tsunamis are caused when an earthquake causes the seafloor to rise of fall. This is when two tectonics plates collide into each other at a plate boundary. The denser plate would subduct under the other plate, which leads to a rise or fall of the seafloor. This movement of the seafloor will cause a rapid displacement of water, and a wave would form. As the wave approaches the coastline, it would get higher as the seafloor gets shallower, causing a tsunami.

  19. Tsunamis don't necessarily occur in coastal areas but any place which is near a coastline. When there is a strong enough vibration in the seafloor usually caused by an earthquake it creates a tsunami. Although the general cause of a tsunami are earthquakes they aren't the sole cause of tsunamis. Tsunamis can also be formed by landslides as in the case of the island near Africa. Besides landslides, asteroids or comets can cause tsunamis.

  20. Tsunamis can occur at shorelines, in coastal areas and mostly near low lying lands near a large body of water. Tsunamis occur when there is a violent distrubance deep below the ocean surface. Earthquakes aren't the only sole cause of tsunamis. Landslides and volcanic eruptions can also cause tsunamis. The underwater earthquakes and subduction zones are common causes for tsunamis. When earthquakes oocur sudden movements push against the water and powerful waves are produced. These seismic waves travel outward from the earthquake and their energy is spread out over large distances and great water depths. The speed of tsunamis can reach 950 km/h. When tsunami waves get close to shore the waves slow down and pact together with a lot of energy as they increase in height. Some coastlines can slow the tsunami down and push it into a massive wave. The water's force can destroy buildings, houses, and lives.

  21. Yes, earthquakes are the cause of tsunamis because its a large body of water and it cause huge waves, and not only in coastal areas.

  22. "Do tsunamis occur only in coastal communities? Are earthquakes the sole cause of tsunamis????"

I believe that tsunamis can occur anywhere where there is a violent disturbance or a sudden change of the seafloor. However, I believe earthquakes are most damaging and dangerous near or at these coastal communities. Earthquakes are subductions zones are the most common causes of earthquakes. However, comets, asteroids, volcanic distributions, and landslides may also cause earthquakes. Tsunami's travel very far and very fast. Tsunami's do not stop until they hit a coast, or something very hard. Tsunami's travel faster than the speed of a jet plane, which may also cause alot of damage, related to the damage which recently happened in Japan.

  23. Tsunamis can happen anywhere in the world. A tsunami is a series of traveling ocean waves of extremely long length. Tsunamis occur when two plates of the earths crust rub against each other under the ocean. This builds up pressure. And when the pressure gets too powerful it bursts open, sending shock waves which builds up a big wave. Tsunami's don't always occur in coastal communities. I also agree to the fact that earthquakes cause tsunamis because this causes the seafloor to rise of fall. This is when two tectonics plates collide into each other at a plate boundary. The denser plate would sub-duct under the other plate, which leads to a rise or fall of the seafloor. This movement of the seafloor will cause a quick displacement of water, and a wave would form. Which continues to form a tsunami.

  24. Tsunamis do occur in coastal communities. They live right by the ocean.
Earthquakes are the sole cause of tsunamis. The sudden movements pushes against the water creating a big, destructive wave

  25. A tsunami - A very large ocean wave that is caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption and often causes extreme destruction when it strikes land. Tsunamis can have heights of up to 30 m (98 ft) and reach speeds of 950 km (589 mi) per hour. They are characterized by long wavelengths of up to 200 km (124 mi) and long periods, usually between 10 and 60 minutes. See Note at tidal wave. They dont to occur in only costal communities-- costal njust has water nearby meaning tusunamis need water so they are mostly found at costal communties.

  27. Tsunamis may happen anywhere in the world and when it happens it is very destructive. It even devastating as well. It even happens in low-lying coastal areas, the shore of coastal rivers, and even tidal flats when water produces fast flooding. It may happen at night or at day time but you just have to be prepared for it and its aftershocks. Volcanic eruptions and landslides are the cause of tsunamis too as well. Earthquakes are not the only ones. Tsunamis kill many lives and its just a horrible scene. For example the one in Japan. It will take t days and months to figure out who died from this destruction. Three nuclear plants had not succeeded. There is now a town that became a trash and the people had trouble escaping. It is like a waste land

  28. A tsunamie can happen at anytime and day, mostly near a costal area with low lying land.it is very stong, fast and causes alot of damages.it washes away many houses and lives of innocent people. it is very dangerous and can occure more than once. it is a series of waved forming under the water by the disterbance of an earthquake. The earthquake is what cuses the water tu move arouund then causing the ground to shake. i do think that earthquakes are the make cause of tsunamie, without an earthquake a tsunamie would not form. the eathquake is what makes the water to move that leads to the tsunamies.

  29. A tsunami can affect places not along the coast. That depends on if it hits anything when it reaches land. Another factor is the power of the tsunami. A very powerful one can sweep the whole coastal line and maybe reach further onto the land. Earthquakes are technically the sole causes of tsunamis. They have the power to make the water travel that fast and make tides that large. The power from that earthquakes sends waves into the water and causes a current to make the waves. I send a prayer to those that were effected in japan because of the tsunami and earthquake!

  30. What I think is that tsunamis occur suddenly, often without warning, they are extremly dangerous to coastal communties. Tsunamis are formed as an result of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landsides that occur under the sea.

  31. Tsunamis are mostly caused when a tsunami is in a series of waves generated in an ocean or other body of water by a disturbance such as an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or meteorite impact.
