Plate Tectonics = Earthquakes = Tsunamis!!!

Japan is located in a tectonically active area.  Use your knowledge of Plate Tectonics to describe the area where Japan is.  Based on the tectonic movement that just occurred in this region, can you predict where another earthquake can happen next?

  1. Japan lies on the cusp of the Pacific-Philippine-Eurasian triple plate junction, where the complex interactions of three tectonic plates is unpredictable and loaded with potential activity.
When the Pacific Plate encounters the Philippine Plate, because it is older and more dense than the younger Philippine, it subducts below and results in the formation of a deep ocean trench. There might be an earthquake in Hawaii and it might come to New York. I think it also could go to China or India.

  3. Well, poor Japan is between two convergent plate. The Eurasian Plate and The Pacific Plate and the Philippine Plate. As Mr. Ecchi said its an active area.
The next poor country is going to be all the coast line country west of south america. Because the South American Plate is colliding with Nazca Plate and parts of the Caribbean Plate and Antarctic Plate. Also there are Other plate that has convergent plate. Such as the Indo-Australian Plate and the Pacific Plate.

  5. I think the next earthquake will occur somewhere in Asia or Australia because their plates are near each other.

  6. Im taking a quess maybe somewere in asia since there tectonic plates are close.

  8. The islands of Japan are located in a volcanic zone on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is the result of large oceanic movements occurring over hundreds of millions of years from the mid-Silurian to the Pleistocene as a result of the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the Amurian Plate and Okinawa Plate to the south which are continental plates. Then subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Okhotsk Plate to the north. There probably won't be another earthquake any time soon. I think that because the fault line already has been weakened. The fault line determines how powerful the earthquake is going to be.

  9. Japan is a area which is tectonically active. The islands of Japan such as Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu are located in a volcanic zone called on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is the outcome of large oceanic movements that have occurred over hundreds of millions of years from the mid-Silurian to the Pleistocene as a result of the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate that is beneath the continental Amurian Plate and Okinawa Plate to the south, and subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Okhotsk Plate to the north. There have been many volcanoes in Japan which have led to tsunamis and have created destructions. I predict that another earthquake will happen in Tokyo because it is in Asia and it is close to Japan.

  10. Japan is located between the Eurasian Plate, Phillipino Plate, and Pacific Plate. It is near a convergent boundary. When the earthquake occured in Japan the plates probably must have collided with each other. Since Japan has many islands with volcanoes they lead to tsunamis. I don't think you can really predict where earthquakes will occur. We do know they mostly happen at plate boundaries but you can't really know a specific location. If I were to guess I think the next place an earthquake will occur is on islands in the Pacific Ring or Hawaii. Since the Pacific Plate stretches from Asia to all the way to the border of California, when it collides with another plate most islands in the Pacific Plate will be effected with earthquakes.

  11. "Based on the tectonic movement that just occurred in this region, can you predict where another earthquake can happen next?"

As this tsunami has already passed Hawaii and has reached California, I believe the next one may happen again in an island in the Pacific Ocean. The epic center for the recent tsunami in Japan was nearly 6 miles east of Japan. This earthquake had a 8.9 magnitude, and if it was closer to Japan, it couldve been deadlier and worse. A aftershock occurs every 3 hours. Now, I believe the next tsunami or earthquake will occur in Hawaii or Japan again, as these are common areas for earthquakes and tsunamis.

However, god forbid another one like this one may happen again, as many lives were lost, and we do not want this to happen again.

  12. Japan is between two convergent plates. The Eurasian Plate and The Pacific Plate and the Philippine Plate. Earthquakes could spread along Asia, it might hit India if it reaches that far. To me it looks like the earthquake is just hitting along the coastline?? Ps- Am i the only NON_SP KID WHO DOES THIS WORK____ I AM ON THE HONNOR ROLL I SHOULD BE IN SP___ thank you:)

  13. Japan is located at the Eurasian, pacific, and Philliphine plates. It is near a convergent boundry meaning when the earthquake occured in Japan plates collided with each other. If I were to guess where the next earthquake will be is maybe in South America because it's colliding with the Nazca plate and part of the carribean plate. There is a possibility that if these plates collide there will be an earthquake which can then lead to a tsunamis.
    Plate tectonics= EARTHQUAKES= TSUNAMIS.

  14. Japan is a place with convergent boundary. It is also located on the Ring of Fire. That is a reason why Japan has earthquakes often. It is located on the pacific, eurasian, and the Philippine plate.

According to that, I consider that that next earthquake might occur somewhere near those plates due to the fact that they are convergent boundaries. It might be somewhere on Ring of Fire.

  16. hi. poop. bye. (sorry I was feeling random)

My answer: The plates in Japan could have collided with each other, and that could have caused the tsunami; Japan is located near a convergent boundary. Because of this, I am guessing that the next earthquake is likely to take place in an area like Japan; An area near a convergent boundary.

  17. Good guess Gabby!! As a matter of fact, scientist are predicting a 7.0 earthquake in the next few days! I hope that their prediction does not come to fruition!!

  18. Afifa, remember that plates are like pieces of a puzzle. Therefore, if you move one, the rest are going to be affected! Now, which ones may be affected by the sudden movement at the boundary off the coast of Japan????

  19. Japan is located in the region where the Pacific,Eurasian, and Philippine meet. Since Japan lies next to a convergent boundary many earthquakes are likely to happen and that is why there aren't tall buildings in Japan. The new earthquake that is going to occur with a 7.0 magnitude is going to be an aftershock of the earlier earthquake because the plates aren't finished colliding. I think the next areas to have earthquakes are going to be the coastal areas near Japan because as i Said before the plate aren't finished colliding.

  20. Hello. Japan is located on convergent boundaries. It is located on the Philippine, Eurasian, and Pacific plates. It is also on something called the Ring of Fire(pg.196 in Science Textbook). It is a belt of volcanoes surrounding the Pacific Ocean. I think the next earthquake will happen somewhere near Japan such as the little islands in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Well, that is my answer to your question. Thank you very much!!

  22. Japan lies between two convergent plate boundaries. The three plates are Eurasian Plate, Philippine Plate, and Pacific Plate. It is also located in a volcanically active area called the Ring of Fire. I think the next earthquake may be 7.0 magnitude in the Richter Scale because of the several aftershocks of the former earthquake that occurred in Japan. The plates haven't finished colliding and tectonic activity will continue. I think the future earthquake will occur in the countries and islands that surround Japan in the Ring of Fire.

  23. Japan is an area that is tectonically active. Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku are island in Japan that is located in a volcanic zone called the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is the results of large oceanic movements that have occurred over hundreds of millions of years from the mid-Silurian to the Pleistocene as an outcome of subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate that is under the continental Amurian Plate and the Okinawa Plate to the south. The Pacific Plate also goes under the Okhotsk Plate to the north; many earthquakes in Japan caused great destructions and caused devastation to thousands of people.
One can predict that another earthquake will happen in the Western Coast of North America. Since the Eurasian plate and the Pacific Plate converged, the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate will diverge. Since the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate are diverging an earthquake will possibly occur in the Western Coast of North America.

  24. Japan has been affected badly. I believe the next country that has a possible chance of being affected is the west of South America. Japan is in the Eurasian, Philippine plate , and the Pacific Plate. Obviously earthquakes occur when two plates slide past each other like the San Andreas Fault. For example the Pacific plate slides past the North American Plate. Eurasian Plate and the Pacific plate converge which means that the plates are colliding which ends up to subduction zones if the oceanic plate goes under the continental plates only. Japan is basically under or on top of three plates

  25. I made a mistake on my comment. We can actually predict where another earthquake might occur. When two plates interact with each other other plate tectonics are affected as well. So when the earthquake occured seismic waves were released and other plates must have moved. Therefore; the Pacific Plate and North American Plate might interact with each other and the next earthquake might occur near the western coastal area in North America.

  26. we can predict where the next earthquake may be. since japan is over a convergent boundary, the eurasian and pacific plates are colliding into each other, therefore, in other locations such as the US west coast could be effected by this. this would probably trigger an earthquake in the west coast of north america in a divergent boundary.

  27. Japan is in the Eurasain Plate which subducts with the Phillippine and North American Plates. Another earthquake might occur on the west coast of the United States.

  28. I think the next place that will have an earthquake will be along the west coast of the United States. There is allot of tectonic activity happening here. There are minor earthquakes on a daily basis. The plates can converge and cause a earthquake. One of these places in particular that has much tectonic activity is California. A earthquake can happen at any time there, as they lay upon a fault line. But as Japan they are prepared for this as they have there buildings built for earthquakes. They do this because earthquakes can occur any time.(sorry for the late comment had some technical issues) I send a prayer for those in Japan!

  29. After the earthquake in japan scientists predict that there would be an earthquake along the west coast in california. The reason why this would happen along the west coast is because scientist bieleve that after the earthquake in japan the plaits are unstabled so the scientists think the next earthquake will be in california near the city Sanfrancisco.

When the plates hit each other one plate moves up when the plate moves up the water rises then the water will move to the waves making it bigger.

  30. I predict that a tsunami would hit places such as Hawaii, California, and even china if it is stron enough.

  33. Japan is located at a convergent subduction zone where the Pacific plate slowly moves under the Eurasian and Philippine plates. It is also in an area called the Ring of Fire. Based on the tectonic movement that just occurred in this region, I can predict that another earthquake may happen in the western coasts of North America. This is because the Eurasian and Pacific Plate converged, leaving the North American and Pacific plate to diverge. The Earthquakes in Japan may have changed the land from what we know now.

  34. Japan is over a convergent boundary. I think the next place that will have an earthquake will be along the west coast of the United States. There are minor earthquakes everywhere in the world on a daily basis. If plates converge they cause an earthquake.

  35. Japan is in the middle of 3 tectonic plates. So that's why Japan is considered to be in the "Ring of Fire." Japan has a great history of Earthquakes dating back to the last recorded at year 684.

  36. Japan is the middle of tectonic plates. which causes it to easily have earthquakes. when the tectonic plates move under each other that cause the ground to also "move and shake"

  37. well japan is a relly active area because its right between two active convergent plates. so yea......

p.s nazum is wrong cause its convergent plates not tectonic :P
